Matter Management

The problem

Ask where a matter lives and the honest answer is usually a list of places: email, a shared drive, a spreadsheet, a wall calendar, the accounting package, and somebody's memory. Each works alone. The failure is between them.

How Mersal solves it

Mersal makes the matter the unit of record. Timeline, parties, documents, tasks, hearings, correspondence, time, expenses and billing anchor to one workspace under the firm's own numbering, with access filtered at the database by firm and role.

How it works

Intake that gates itself

New matters run through a conflict pre-flight before the matter exists, capture the primary and related clients, the responsible lawyer and the team, and can inherit a template so every matter of a kind starts the same way.

Approval where the firm wants it

A firm can require that matters opened by associates are reviewed before they become active. Pending matters queue with who submitted them and how long they have waited, so the queue is a workload, not a mystery.

Lifecycle, not just a status field

Matters close, archive, pause and reopen with a recorded reason, and matters closed beyond a threshold archive automatically rather than accumulating.

Live for everyone in it

Activity, documents and folders update for colleagues working the same matter without anyone reloading.

What it prevents

  • A matter that exists in seven places and agrees with itself in none
  • Work opened outside the firm's own review process
  • Closed matters cluttering the active list forever
