Matter Templates

The problem

Two lawyers open the same kind of matter a week apart and produce two different files: different folders, different first tasks, different names for the same thing. The difference is not judgement, it is memory.

How Mersal solves it

A template carries the folder structure, the opening tasks and the practice-area defaults for a kind of work. Choosing one at intake materialises the whole shape of the matter at creation, so standardisation costs nothing at the point of use.

How it works

Built-in and firm-defined

System templates cover common practice areas and can be duplicated but not edited, so a firm always has a clean original to work from. A firm builds its own alongside them, and can save an existing matter as a template once it has found a shape that works.

Folders and tasks, materialised at creation

The folder tree is created with the matter, nested as defined, and the opening tasks are raised at once. Nobody has to remember what a trademark matter needs on day one.

Preview before it applies

A template shows what it will create before the matter is opened, so choosing one is a decision rather than a guess.

What it prevents

  • Two lawyers producing two different files for the same kind of work
  • The opening checklist living in one person's head
