Billing across currencies without rewriting history

The situation

Half the client base pays in one currency and the firm reports in another. The tax authority wants the VAT line in a third.

What goes wrong without a system

Everything converts at today's rate, so last year's revenue changes every morning and no figure can be repeated to an accountant without an explanation.

How it runs in Mersal

  1. Bill in the client's currency

The invoice carries its own currency and its own rate, entered at issue.

  2. The rate freezes

That rate is stored on the document. Reporting derives from it, so the market moving does not move history.

  3. Carry tax locally

The VAT line can be denominated separately, for the authority that asks for it.

  4. Change base currency deliberately

If the reporting currency changes, Mersal asks whether to convert at a stated rate or relabel one-to-one, and re-bases reporting without touching what clients were charged.

What it prevents

  • Revenue that changes overnight
  • A settings change rewriting issued invoices
