Retainers

The problem

Retainer billing goes wrong in one of two directions: a cycle is missed, or a cycle is billed twice because two people were being helpful on the same afternoon.

How Mersal solves it

Each client's retainer carries an amount and a frequency, and Mersal knows what has already been billed in the current period. Generating is per client or as a batch across the firm, and rebilling is an explicit action rather than an accident.

How it works

The cycle is the unit

Whether a retainer has been billed this period is computed from the retainer's own cadence, so the answer does not depend on who is looking or when.

Batch, with visibility

A firm can resolve the whole cycle at once and see what is on the monthly book, how many contracts are active and what is still awaiting its cycle.

What it prevents

  • Billing the same retainer cycle twice
  • A cycle nobody noticed had passed
